Seeing Doubt as a Gateway to Truth

Doubt. A word and feeling that can be pervasive in thought and action. “I doubt this will work out, or work at all,” “I doubt that I can do this,” “I doubt that they are capable of this.” It’s like a black ooze that runs through our energy, coating hopes and dreams, desires and passions, causing us to sink down or deeper into old habits and patterns that hold us back.

According to the dictionary, doubt is defined as: a feeling of uncertainty about the truth, reality, or nature of something. Doubt can certainly help us in situations such as spam emails: “I doubt this is true because of the source.” But it can be one of the biggest hindrances to moving forward into a more positive and spiritual way of living. When we sit for meditation for only a week, and do not see results right away, doubt begins to take over. It is really the ego saying “I want results NOW”, and if I don’t get results now, I’m done with it.

Doubt causes us to question ourselves and our inner wisdom such as “Well, it’s not black and white, science can’t prove it, so it must not be real.” So we ignore gut feelings, hunches, visions of clarity because it can’t be proven. But underneath that gut feeling, intuition, and inner wisdom, lies absolute truth and reality. Often times realities that we don’t want to see such as needing to end a relationship, or quit a job, or peace and joy by sticking with meditation. When we doubt ourselves, we doubt truth and wisdom.

Doubt can be a door to open, a gateway to see where we are hung up on our own ego, a path to move past the doubt into something far greater. When you find yourself experiencing doubt, notice it, breath, take a moment to ask what it is you are doubting and why, and ask for guidance on what the truth is for you in this moment. Doubt is an easy way to get out of something that takes work; and change and growth takes work and commitment, whether it’s your personal evolution, learning a new skill, or starting a business. Doubt will come up, and when it does, choose to step through it into your inner wisdom of truth and reality – that you can do it, that it will work out, that you are capable, that you have wisdom within and that it is worth listening to!

“Face your fear and doubts, and new worlds will open to you.”
