Pick your 2018 Word of the Year

On New Year’s day of 2018, it was a Super Moon. This means that the moon was the closest it will be to planet earth for the entire year.

Incredible.

With the closeness brings power. Power in your intentions and your actions. Power in the energy you put forth in each step you take.

Intentions are really helpful because they help guide our actions. They give us clarity with where we’re going.

It’s like rowing a boat with a rudder versus no rudder spinning round and round in circles. A word of the year can help you have a clear intention in what you want to create. It gives direction to the energy of your life.

Below is a step by step guide on helping you pick your word of the year.

First, create a time for quiet and reflection. Thirty minutes to one hour is helpful.

Sit in silence for a few minutes to center and BE.
When you open your eyes, pick up your journal and write down three intentions you have for the coming year.

Intentions usually start with, “To be…..”

It can be in regards to your home, your finances, your family, your health, your community, your career or calling, your relationship with Spirit, your relationship with yourself, and more.

Listen to what your heart is calling you to focus on.

Once these three intentions are written out, close your eyes again and start to listen to words; words that capture the intention that is most important to your heart.

Here’s a list of some to choose from (and there are more!):
connection
loving
abundant
trust
faith
joy
breathe
peace
grateful
courageous
bold
fun
laughter
playful
healthy
energetic
strong
vibrant
randiant
clear
happy
compassionate
forgiving
whole-hearted
patient

Start by writing down the ones that resonate for you. It could be 5 or 10 of them.

Be aware to not go into the “Oh my God, I need to do all those things!” That’s the perfectionistic side coming out.

Take a breath and with your eyes closed, go through this exercise – star the ones that have the stronger “YES” in your heart (you’ll feel a physical excitement or rightness in your chest). Then narrow those down to four words, then down to one.

If you need to take a few days to contemplate it, then do so and come back later to continue.

Now, with your word of the year, answer these questions in your journal:

  1. Why is this the perfect word for you this year?
  2. What are five action steps you can take to create this word in your life?
  3. What are your personal obstacles that could hold you back from acting on this word? (this could be beliefs, fears, or old destructive habits)
  4. How can you overcome these obstacles to living your word?
  5. If you were to hit a “home run” with this word one year from now, how would your life be different?
BONUS
Put your word of the year to some color. Draw, paint, color, create it on paper and put it on your wall to look at every day. It reminds your subconscious mind of the intention and what you’re going for so your actions reflect your intention. Have fun with it!

Finally, share what your word of the year is below with why it’s the perfect word for you this year. We need each on this journey! My 2018 word of the year is DEVOTION. It’s the perfect word for me this year because my heart is calling me to be devoted deeply to Spirit, God, Source, Creation through my actions, service and daily practice.

Love it Amy! Thank you for sharing your word, and many blessings to you!

  2. Mary

My word is HEALTHY. I had a near death experience in a car accident last October.
I am suffering NOT only from whiplash, but the therapy I am doing has made me aware of how my emotional garbage is holding me back from feeling alive in my body. It is the perfect word for me because I booked myself to play a concerto with orchestra next January 12 (one day exactly from tomorrow:) I want to be healthy so I can still play the violin the way I so want to. It is also the perfect word for me because my heart is calling me to be alive in my body so I can dance, play music, and have fun!

I love your word of the year Mary! Thank you for sharing. You CAN be healthy again! I highly recommend reading the books, “You are the Placebo” by Dr. Joe Dispenza, and “Wired for Healing” by Annie Hopper. Your mental and emotional state is one of the keys to healing as you mentioned – shedding the “emotional garbage.” You can do it!
