Are “Signs from the Universe” Trustworthy?

For some of you, this seems totally normal to talk about. For others, it may seem in the “woo-woo” category.

I hear people say, “Maybe it’s a sign that I received an email from you,” or “It’s a sign that they didn’t call me back, I wasn’t meant for the position anyway.”

If I believed all the “signs from the universe,” I wouldn’t still be in business and following my true purpose.

If I believed every time someone unsubscribed from my mailing list was a sign from the universe, I would have given up a long time ago.

Or when I wanted to do a radio interview on KMMS 1450 and hadn’t heard back from the interviewer for months after sending emails and calling, and believed it was a sign, I wouldn’t have done the interview.

Or when 3 potential new clients said no to working with me in a row, and believed it was a sign, I would have said I’m not meant to help people.

Be really careful with what you believe are “signs” because it does 2 things when you believe this:

  1. Can get you off course from your true purpose or calling.
  2. Can totally destroy any trust in your intuition and wisdom.

These are big costs – I mean BIG, HUGE, ENORMOUS.

That’s why it’s really important for you to think twice about a “sign” from outside of yourself. Listen to your own wisdom, listen to your body, listen to your heart. And if you don’t know how, then hire me to teach you how to do it, or someone else.

I use “angel cards” in much the same way. I pick one, and listen to what resonates with the card from within me, being careful to not believe that something outside of myself is giving me the answer.

This is really important. I mean really important.

Stop looking outside of yourself for the answer – for any answer. You have the answer. It just may not come in the time frame you want it to come in. Be patient. Get curious. Listen to your body.

The exception: there are always exceptions to every “rule” right?

After 1.5 years in business, I was at a cross roads. I wanted to stop working my other jobs in outdoor education so I could devote myself fully to my purpose, but was scared out of my mind to do it. So I was taking baby steps. But this one was a big one, not working for the company I had worked for for 17 years.

They had been my backup. Tried and true. I could count on this work, a paycheck, and security. You know what I’m talking about.

So I asked for some guidance from anything, “Show me a sign!” I yelled out into the air, nothing in particular answering my question.

And low and behold, something happened. Over the next 24 hours, the same quote showed up 3 times, from 3 different sources: A book I was reading, a magazine I was flipping through, and a movie I was watching. The quote was by Rumi, “Let yourself be silently drawn by the pull of what you really love.”

After those 24 hours, I decided to not return to the familiar, or to the security. And I haven’t looked back since.

But here’s the thing: I saw that quote because I put the intention out there. Because I was ready, because I could hear it. I wouldn’t have seen or even noticed that quote if all of the above wasn’t true. AND the quote spoke to me.

That’s the take away for you. For the sake of you, your purpose, your heart, and your truth, don’t look outside of yourself for the answer, to anything. Talk about it with others, but come back to you. Always.
