I hear this from many of my clients and students: “I want to know my purpose/career NOW,” or “I should be farther along then I am – when will I get there?” or “It has to happen by… or else (I’m a failure)” or “I can’t wait that long for clarity, I want it NOW.”
I not only hear this a lot, I use to experience the same thing. And I still do sometimes, but on a much more subtle level – sometimes in relation to my business (I want to have my business cards done NOW), sometimes in relation to my spiritual path (I want to be enlightened NOW).
What I can tell you is that when you open up to life having it’s own time frame, which is usually outside of your time frame, there’s A LOT LESS STRUGGLE inside.
The angst you feel? That comes from wanting things/life/you/others to be different than they are. Including time frames. Believing that you need to know your purpose now is just a belief.
I get the frustration of wanting something now – I use to experience it too. So much so that one night a few years ago I had a very clear dream. I was in the dream screaming at the top of my lungs, “I WANT DIRECTION!!!” And this ghost like appearance came into view and said, “You need to go to New York and go to school.”
I woke up thinking, “What the hell was that?” and turned to the internet for some answers (the next morning of course). Nothing seem to fit for me. It was a year later I read something in a book that gave me the answer – The Omega Institute in New York – that felt right. Another year later I went there, and another year later I created the transformational Living Beyond Belief Retreat from my experience at Omega that I now offer.
It was 3 YEARS from when I had that dream and was in total frustration to when the answer was clear. Once I let go of needing to have the answer in my time frame and focused more on my growth and opening, I followed “the bread crumbs” as my friend Elaine says and found peace within.
Those are the little hints or clues along the way that is a sense or word or pull that says, “read this book” or “take this course” or “work with this person” – they are not your life plan all laid out in front of you. They come when you are not looking for it and when you are open to hearing it.
So what do you do when you’re all wound up, wanting the answer NOW?
Follow these tips:
- Take a really deep breath, and another really deep breath.
- Say to yourself, “all is well right now, all is well.”
- Say to yourself, “I trust in myself and Life/Spirit/Divine/Universe that it all unfolds perfectly.”
- Take time to connect with your wisdom through meditation, journaling, quiet walks, yoga, or art – anything that helps you get out of your head of fears and beliefs.
The answers lie within you – just out of the time frame that you want them to be. Open to this, breathe into it, surrender, and the answers will come over time.
